What We Do

by Danny Vanderpool

Since 2023, we have led the effort to streamline efforts to protect and manage the Kuskokwim River watershed for current and future generations.

Our Vision

By 2029, we will be a sustainable, widely recognized organization with diverse representation, dedicated to protecting the Kuskokwim River watershed. Through collaboration and shared knowledge, we will:

  • Collect and share data with purpose,

  • Strengthen capacity and partnerships,

  • Preserve and protect natural resources,

  • Amplify our story and impact, and

  • Cultivate future leaders while passing down traditional ecological knowledge.

Our Mission

The MUK Watershed Council is dedicated to preserving and protecting the watershed to ensure its health, sustainability, and abundance for current and future generations. Through collaboration, stewardship, and advocacy, we provide a unified voice for the region, fostering resilience and safeguarding natural resources for years to come.

What We’ve Achieved

  • Representatives from six villages, the school district, industry, and fisheries have met regularly to collaborate and strengthen the Watershed Coalition.

  • Developed an internship program with Georgetown University, collaborating with students to create a searchable catalog of research on the Kuskokwim and begin synthesizing data into interactive story maps.

  • Developed new collaborations, leading to additional funding for research on the Kuskokwim to address critical data gaps.

  • The organizations developing the coalition are working more collaboratively, increasing awareness of each other's efforts, providing support where possible, and leveraging existing resources.

  • Interviewed Kuskokwim residents, including Elders and youth, to capture their perspectives and created a video to share "The Story of the Kuskokwim" as told by the community.
